A symbolic
construction of the first phase of the South-North Water Diversion Project to
raise the height of the Danjiangkou dam and raise the water level in the
reservoir from 157 to 170 meters above sea level.

	The first phase of
the middle line of China's South-North Water Diversion Project is soon to be
completed, with the water from Danjiangkou reservoir in Hubei Province running
over 1,200 kilometers to reach the Chinese capital Beijing.

	Danjiangkou
reservoir is the largest artificial lake in Asia and contains high quality
water. The first phase project was launched in 2003, and was designed to supply
water to Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and Henan. It is designed to divert 9.5 billion
cubic meters of water every year to 19 big and medium cities and over 100
counties, effectively relieving the water shortage of the parched four regions
in north China.

	Based on the needs
of the project, 345,000 people along the line have been relocated; 16 cities and
towns have been relocated; 160 enterprises and 609 institutions have received
compensation for the inconvenience caused to them and 609 cultural sites have
been preserved.
